Contest Yachts, Holland’s leading semi-custom sailing #yacht constructor, is delighted to display at Cannes the latest launched Contest #67CS performance bluewater cruiser. With all the space, comforts and featuring that larger yachts enable, the 21-metre Contest #67CS remains at a size still well suited to owner and family operation yet with the cabin facility for professional crew should helping hands be preferred.
Built to the exacting standards the world has learned to expect from the best of Dutch shipyards, the Contest #67CS is not just a beautiful and very capable #yacht, but one of the most technically advanced for her size, both in design and engineering of structure and onboard systems. And the innovation continues in the achievement of such simple management of otherwise complex systems and a level of quietness rarely experienced in a #yacht this size, whether in hotel mode or cutting through a big seaway. There will be possibilities for test sailing the Contest #67CS while in Cannes.
In 2017, Yachting World described the Contest #67CS as “perhaps the most impressive new #yacht under 80ft in production today” acknowledging “the credit for creating this character goes to the owner and interior design team, but it is the quality of engineering and construction at the yard that makes the boat so tranquil. The amount of machinery and systems involved on this size of boat can be daunting. Contest’s practical, methodical approach is of superyacht standard and ensures owners have the ability to fault-find and maintain the boat easily.”
The version on show in Cannes has a four-cabin arrangement with vast master suite aft, two guest double cabins forward of the mast, and a two-berth crew cabin in the bow. There are many variants on this, including a forward main suite and bunked cabins midship. The big u-shaped galley with its top-line equipment and fitting sits to port, aft of a large, luxurious saloon, and takes full design-advantage of wrapping around the aft bulkhead instead of suffering the space constraining corridor through to the aft suite that is so prevalent in other brands. On the Contest #67CS, that access instead runs more conveniently past the starboard nav-comms table and also the dedicated, standing-height technical room which keeps all essential electronics gathered and away from the heat of the machinery space. Interior styling is by Wetzels Brown and in the case of the showboat incorporates pale leather cushioned panelling and soft furnishings into a modern teak interior with light oak floors. Detailing includes clever space-mirroring trompe l’oeil effect in an already daylight-bright interior.
Naval architecture is by celebrated design house judel/vrolijk who worked also on the evolution of house style for the external appearance, keeping the Contest #67CS immediately identifiable within the brand while advancing modernity with more vertical ends, raised topsides and altered sheerline. Bucking the at times questionable trend for twin rudders, the favoured, safe deep-ocean practice of single, balanced skeg-hung rudder is retained, and the Contest #67CS has been designed and suitably ballasted for sailing flatter and faster, and in more comfort. The Carbon rig option here is Axxon, with North 3Di sails for the cutter rig with high-spec hydraulic furlers and electric winches.
There is generous locker space set into the expansive, flush teak decks for all the paraphernalia of long distance cruising even with the tender stowed away in the stern garage whose automated door doubles as swim and dive platform, a compressor being a frequent, preferred additional option. Working the uncluttered decks is made simple with perfectly sited and aligned, substantial hardware including an automated launching system for the concealed anchor.
Specification throughout is class leading with bigger systems and gear for eased handling and longevity, and maintenance is simplified with in-built redundancy including switchover, for example, of fuel, cooling and bilge systems. Nothing is left to chance. That’s why since 1972 each and every Contest sailing #yacht has been Lloyds’ Register certified.
And later this year #contestyachts launches its largest yet, the all-new 26-metre flagship Contest #85cs. Designed by judel/vrolijk with interiors by Wetzels Brown, her size and serious semi-custom approach allow for many interesting interpretations. This first commission is for an owner with extensive deep ocean experience and intended for the continuation of a previously stalled world circumnavigation with short-handed crew. With the owner’s and captain’s very particular views on safety and simple handling and maintenance, this new #yacht incorporates extensive new thinking and practice in a #yacht of this size.
First viewing and sail trials of the Contest #85cs will be at a late autumn invitational Press #Event in the Mediterranean.
